The stylist and owner of The Little Red Planet shares with us the little secrets about her beloved Max.

Sono comodamente seduta nella cornice trendy di uno spazio di Williamsburg, Brooklyn NYC, aspettando che Mindi Smith, stylist e proprietaria di Little Red Planet mi raggiunga per la nostra intervista. Il negozio di Mindi è inserito in una specie di bellissimo mercato metropolitano con tanti pop-up store. A un certo punto la porta si apre e compare un bellissimo cane bianco che si muove lentamente, con Mindi a stretta distanza. Max, questo è il suo nome, conosce la strada e fa largo a Mindi verso il bancone del caffè.
Sembra una star… le persone intorno la guardano, parlano, bisbigliano e finalmente trovano il coraggio di farsi avanti e chiedere un selfie o una fotografia. Max è massiccia e morbida come un orso polare ma senza la tendenza aggressiva di volerti mangiare. Appena arriva da me dandomi un colpetto sulla mano, penso contenta: “Credo di piacerle!”
Prima dell’intervista Mindi ed io parliamo molto di Max, presumo che mantenerla le costi una piccola fortuna con quel look da pedigree!, quindi mi stupisco quando Mindi mi spiega che è una trovatella. “Come può qualcuno abbandonare un cane come questo?” penso tra me e me. Tra l’altro ho riconosciuto Max come la protagonista della campagna del brand Tuchinda scattata da Zoe Adlersberg e ho pubblicato quelle foto su Pirouette non solo perché erano belle ma anche perché mi ero innamorata del cane – ed ora eccola qui, davanti a me, in carne ed ossa!
Mentre parliamo, due bambine si avvicinano pian piano fino a trovarsi di fronte a noi. Dicono ciao a Max cercando uno sguardo di rassicurazione dal loro papà.
Mindi mi aiuta a scegliere qualche capo e mentre troviamo la luce migliore per le foto procediamo con l‘intervista. Mi ritrovo a pensare, con una punta d’invidia, che Max non ha bisogno di nessuna luce particolare. E’ già perfetta così.
Tornando a casa da New York, guardo le foto e vedo che sono quasi tutte incentrate su Max. L’obiettivo la ama, come tutti del resto…

1. È felicissima dentro un’auto in corsa col finestrino abbassato.
2. La sua toelettatura costa più del mio parrucchiere.
3. Le piace mangiare pollo arrosto senza pelle.
4. È sopravvissuta dopo essere saltata nel fiume Gowanus ghiacciato a gennaio.
5. La sua posizione preferita per dormire è supina con le gambe all’aria.

I’m sitting comfortably in trendy Williamsburg Brooklyn NYC waiting for stylist and Little Red Planet owner Mindi Smith to arrive at her store for a Pirouette interview. Mindi’s store is part of an uber cool food venue with multiple pop up stores… the door opens and in wanders Max slowly but purposely with Mindi following closely behind. Max knows where she is and gradually makes her way to say hello to the coffee counter.
Max has a presence a little like a star… people look, talk, whisper and finally pluck up the courage to introduce themselves often with the purpose of obtaining a selfie or picture. Like everyone I fall in love with Max she’s massive and fluffy like a polar bear but without the aggressive tendency to eat you. As she wanders over to me nudging my hand I feel myself getting excited thinking ‘I think she likes me’!
Mindi and I chat about Max before our interview, I presume she cost a small fortune with her pedigree looks so was surprised when Mindi explained she was a rescue dog…’How could anyone give her up’ I think to myself, I also recognise her as the dog from the Tuchinda shoot by Zoe Adlersberg. I featured the photography on Pirouette not only because it was beautiful but also because I loved the dog – and here she is in person 😉
Whilst we are talking two little girls that have been gradually getting closer and closer finally find themselves within touching distance – they say hello to Max looking up to their Dad for reassurance.
Mindi helps me with pulling some pieces for a shoot I’m working on later that day and so after trying to find the most flattering light we get going with our interview. Somewhat enviously I think to myself ‘Max doesn’t need flattering light’… it’s a dog’s life!
When I get home from New York I look through my images and they’re pretty heavy on Max. I guess the camera loves Max as much as everyone else…
