Home Alone takes us back to a time before mobile phones, endless notifications and entertainment always available on demand.
Long afternoons at home had to be filled in other ways: with books, records played again and again, invented games, telephone conversations that lasted until there was nothing left to say, television channels to flick through, rooms transformed into little imaginary worlds.
When I saw this story, I immediately thought of my own childhood. Being home alone had a very special magic. Suddenly, you could use the telephone, touch the things that were usually forbidden, explore the house in a different way. The record player, for example, was absolutely not to be touched — because the records could get scratched.
There was freedom in those moments, and it felt wonderful to be alone, inventing your own world and feeling grown-up for a while.
That is what I love about this story: the retro mood, the quiet rooms, the clothes, the books, the games and the small forbidden objects. It captures that childhood feeling of being independent, curious and free. (Petra Barkhof)
